Career Development is class designed to introduce every 8th grader in the state of Arkansas to the World of Work.
Students are given the opportunity to explore five areas, each preparing them for further education or workforce placement.
1. We will begin by assessing "who you are" by completing multiple assessments and inventories that will direct students to suggested careers based on his/her interests and abilities.
2. We will then research careers based on student interest and suggestions.
3. We will discuss making good decisions, followed by planning for education and careers.
4. Together we will create four-year plans, gaining an understanding of the elective choices and graduation requirements ahead.
5. We will complete our semester by discussing employability skills, focusing on resume writing, interviewing, and so much more.
All semester we will hear from guest speakers, participate in hands-on activities, and have the opportunity to lean as much as we can about the skills needed for success and how to make the most of our time to prepare for the future.
It is our goal that each and every student and parent will embrace discussion, resources, suggestions, and opportunities to start a discussion at home that will set each and every student on his or her individual road to success.

The Teacher
Mrs. Amy Shumate
A graduate of Forrest City High School, I went on to receive a Journalism degree with Public Relations emphasis from Arkansas State University.
Although I was blessed with two parents who worked and encouraged me to continue my education to find success, I had very little direction in terms of what I "wanted to be when I grew up." That lack of planning led me down a path of jobs that, although I enjoyed, I never really felt fulfilled; like I was where I really belonged.
Eventually I felt called to the classroom where I discovered my 'purpose' ~ helping students find theirs. I completed the Non-Traditional Teaching program and earned my certification to be a teacher. I can honestly say there is nothing more validating than knowing you are exactly where you are supposed to be, doing what you are exactly supposed to be doing.
I love my job and I feel blessed with the chance to have it every day. If I can help one student find his or her passion and purpose ~ I've fulfilled my purpose and I love that!
